TinkerCAD Simulation
For this experiment, a Tinkercad simulation was conducted to observe the behavior of resistors and voltage in different configurations.
Resistors in Series
When resistors are connected in series, the current flowing through them is the same for all, but the total voltage is divided across them. The total resistance of the circuit is simply the sum of all individual resistances connected in line.
The formula to calculate the total resistance in series is:
Where R1,R2,R3,…,Rn are the individual resistances in the circuit.
Key Features:
The current (I) through each resistor is the same.
The total voltage (V) of the circuit is the sum of the voltages across each resistor.
Resistors in Parallel
When resistors are connected in parallel, the voltage across each resistor is the same, but the total current is divided among the resistors. The total resistance in a parallel circuit is always less than the resistance of any individual resistor because the circuit provides multiple paths for the flow of current.
The formula to calculate the total resistance in parallel is:
In the TinkerCAD simulation, an electrical circuit was set up with a 5V voltage source and three resistors of 51K ohms, 10K ohms, and 100 ohms. Initially, in a series circuit, the total resistance was calculated by summing up the individual resistances. Subsequently, the amperage in series was measured using an ammeter. The circuit was then reconfigured to have the resistances in parallel, and the amperage was measured in one branch of the parallel circuit. Additionally, the calculation for the total resistance in parallel was performed. These steps allowed for an exploration of the differences in total resistance and amperage between series and parallel circuits.
